The BM&FBOVESPA hosted an exciting, intensive and well-received event featuring Ms. Dilma Rousseff, former Chief of Staff for President Lula and 2010 candidate for the presidency of Brazil as the keynote speaker. Extra rooms were required to house the more than 500 prominent members of the global financial community in attendance. The event was held at The New York Palace Hotel.
The purpose of the event, promoted by the BM&FBOVESPA, was to provide worthwhile and timely information about Brazil to the international financial community. Mr. Edemir Pinto, Chief Executive Officer for BM&FBOVESPA, delivered the opening remarks. He noted this would be the first in a series of events the Exchange would run in New York and London. Mr. Pinto succinctly explained the significance of the occasion, stating “the eyes of the world are as attentive as ever to Brazil at this moment.”
Ms. Dilma Rousseff was the first presidential candidate to accept BM&FBOVESPA’s invitation to speak at the event. Additional speakers included Mr. José Scheinkman, Princeton University economist, and Mr. William Rhodes, Senior Advisor at Citi. They offered thoughtful perspectives on Brazil’s economic/financial strengths, meaningful accomplishments in recent years, and challenges still needing to be addressed.
