Attentive to the concerns of the world with global warming, the great challenge facing humanity in this century, BM&FBOVESPA and the Brazilian Development Bank (Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social/BNDES) have decided, in a joint initiative, to create a new market index—the Carbon Efficient Index (ICO2).
This index comprises the shares of companies participating in the IBrX-50 index that have agreed to join this initiative, by adopting transparent practices with respect to their greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs). The index takes into consideration in its composition, not only the free float of stocks of participating companies, but also the efficiency levels of GHG emissions of these same companies.
The main objective of BM&FBOVESPA and BNDES in this joint initiative is to encourage companies with actively traded stocks to assess, disclose, and monitor their GHG emissions; thus, stimulating a “low carbon" economy. In addition, the index aims to provide the market with a performance indicator that will result in a portfolio buoyed by factors that incorporate issues related to climate change.
